Text: The earliest Ambrose Cobb is found in Tryon/Lincoln Co, NC was his purchase of 200 acres of land on Aug 2 1777. The deed identifies him as a resident of Halifax Co, Virginia. The 1777 deed was excuted in Tryon Co, and was witnessed by local residents ( Sam'l Johnson, John Waters, Alexander Johnson) It was registered at County Court in Jan 1778 and was proved by oath of witness Samuel Johnson or Johnston. On 27th of Jan 1778, Cobb entered into claim 200 acres of vacant land, but his entry was cancelled due to someone else's prior claim. On 26th of Nov 1778 he entered claim to 150 acres and this was subsequently granted. When Ambrose Cobb died c1797, he owned a total of 350 acres comprised of these two tracts. His will bequeathed the 200 acre tract to son William and the 150 acre tract to son James.On 3rd of Jan 1782, Ambrose Cobb, along with William Caldwell, agreed to serve as surety on Charles Abernathy's recongizance Bond. Abernathy, who would laterthat year marry Cobb's daughter Barbara, was cited to appear at Salisbury District Superior Court to answer charges of Treason. Abernathy was accused of having been among the troups of Col. John Moore who fought at Ramsours Mill. Moore, a Lincoln County man, had recieved his military commission through the British Army. The Battle of Ramsours Mill on June 20 1780 in Lincoln Co. pitted local British sympathizers (organized by Moore and Nicholas Welch) against the local Whigs.Robert Alexander was the Justice of the peace before whom Ambrose Cobb agreed to secure Abernathys recognizance bond. Alexander also held the position of Lincoln County commissioner of specific supplies. His responsibilites includedauthorizing purchases of supplies for the Revolutionary War effort. Commisioner Alexander issued the following voucher to Ambrose Cobb, dated the same as Abernathy's Recognizance Bond.

These are to certify that as Commissioner for the County aforesaid I have purchased from Ambrous Cobb fourteen Bushels and half of Corn at the price's assurtained in Spanish milled dollars by an Resolution of Congress dated the 25th of Feb 1780 amounting in the whole to Nine Spanish milled dollars and three eight's.

On Dec 7, 1796 Ambrose Cobb Sr. witnessed the execution of a deed of sale by John Cobb to Ambrose Cobb Jr. The other witness was James Cobb. This is Ambrose and his sons Ambrose Jr., and James. Some believe that by association John is possibly also a son of Ambrose.
